Forced Colorado Wolf Introduction Underway
May 28, 2019 by Earl Oesterling
A new Wolf Initiative has been filed in Colorado, the following is a link to each of the measures along with a description of how they differ and a possible rational for both of them.New Wolf Initiative 107 http://leg.colorado.gov/Existing Wolf Initiative 79 https://www.sos.state.content/restoration-gray- wolves-1 co.us/pubs/elections/ Initiatives/titleBoard/index. html
First, #79 proposes reintroduction of gray wolves “on public lands in Colorado that are west of the Continental Divide.” The new measure, #107, proposes reintroduction of gray wolves on “designated lands,” defined as, “those lands west of the Continental Divide in Colorado that the commission determines are consistent with its plans to restore and manage gray wolves.” Essentially, this change gives the commission greater discretion in determining where gray wolves should be introduced.
The second change is to the funding mechanism. #79 directed the general assembly to “make such appropriations as are necessary to fund the programs authorized and obligations imposed by this section.” The new measure, #107, directs the general assembly to “make such appropriations as are necessary to fund the programs authorized and obligations.” Essentially, this change allows for a greater appropriation from the legislature to fund reintroduction.
Both initiatives are from the same source. It is speculated the supporters of both initiatives may be reacting to sportsmen not wanting to pay for livestock losses from sportsmen cash funds. They also have some private landowners of significant scale that would accept wolves; Turner Ranch, other Southern Colorado Ranches....or even state lands.
As a sportsmen, please get involved, if you would like to help us keep these initiatives off the ballot here in Colorado and also send your comments on de-listing Gray Wolves from Endangered Species Act, use the links below to do so. You can also sign Big Game Forever's Petition to help de-list wolves using the link below:
The second way to help is to join Big Game Forever, or make a donation, they are on the forefront of battling both initiatives here in Colorado:
